The first ISO standard for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has launched today. As a technical contributor to the standard, Social Value International (SVI) welcomes ISO 53001 as a critical tool for embedding SDG contributions into organisational strategy and decision-making.

This morning, at the ISO Annual Meeting in Paris, ISO and UNDP have launched ISO/UNDP 53001, Management systems for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – Requirements. This International Standard to gives organisations a structured framework for setting up systems to help integrate contributions to the SDGs into strategy, governance and operations. As an official liaison organisation that provided technical contributions throughout the standard’s development, SVI welcomes this milestone and looks forward to supporting its implementation.

Why ISO/UNDP 53001 was developed

Many organisations have already committed to the SDGs in some form, whether by setting climate targets, publishing policies on decent work or gender equality, or mapping their activities against the Goals in their annual reports.

What has been missing is a structured way to turn commitments into practice: to embed them into governance, decision-making, operations and performance measurement.

This is where ISO/UNDP 53001 comes in. It translates the ambition of the SDGs into practical, measurable actions that enable organisations to integrate sustainable development directly into their management systems, while tracking and demonstrating progress with greater clarity and accountability. This, in turn, provides verifiable evidence to meet reporting and disclosure requirements.

Beyond performance management, the standard encourages organisations to take a broader view of how they create value and impact; this can help uncover opportunities for innovation, strengthen market positioning and reveal new pathways for sustainable growth.

Creating a common operating language for sustainability performance

As an International Standard, ISO/UNDP 53001 gives the SDGs a common language and set of requirements that any organisation, in any sector or country, can apply and be measured against. It provides a structure that organisations can build into everyday practice, and makes results easier to assess, benchmark, communicate and use as the basis for credible reporting and disclosure.

SVI’s role as an official liaison organisation

As a Category A liaison organisation to ISO, SVI has made technical contributions to ISO/UNDP 53001 throughout its development. That role builds on our partnership with UNDP since 2020 on the SDG Impact Standards, which ISO and UNDP drew on to develop the new standard.

The Principles of Social Value, the framework at the heart of everything SVI does, are referenced in ISO/UNDP 53001. Principle 1, Involve Stakeholders, is closely aligned with the standard’s approach. By placing a particular emphasis on stakeholder engagement, it ensures that priorities and decisions reflect real-world needs and expectations. This supports more robust performance tracking, stronger accountability and greater trust.
